Måns Wadensjö: What really happened in Sweden?

When Donald Trump said: ‘You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden! Who would believe this?’, no one was quite sure what he meant. Nothing in particular had been going on in Sweden last night. An election later it is clear that something did happen in Sweden after all. The only problem is, though, that nobody knows what exactly. With no clear majority in parliament, the social democratic prime minister Stefan Löfven has been voted away. Yet, he is staying on as head of a temporary government while the rest of the country is trying to figure out if anyone won the election at all, and what they are to do about it. Will the saga of Swedish social democracy continue, or will their liberal opponents seek support from the populist and authoritarian right? Or is Sweden even heading for a Belgian solution, where the country stayed without an elected government for 541 days?
